Let's talk wine

Wine is an important accessory in our lifestyle.
It is something that can't be missed with a good dinner, some social event or just having a good night hanging with your friends!
Wine is everywhere, but what are the differences between red and whites or wine from different areas?

Let's talk wine!

There are so many different kinds of wines, but the most popular reds are:

- Merlot
- Cabernet Sauvignon
- Pinot Noir
- Syrah/Shiraz

Those are the names of the grapes which are used for the wines. Every grape comes a from different region. Reds are best with meat dishes, spicy dishes, cheeses and some pasta.

Merlot

This is a wine made of the Merlot grape, the most planted variety in Bordeaux. This is a wine with high alcohol, a deep color, low tannin and a full body. It can have a plummy or chocolatey aroma or maybe even a hint of tea leaves.
Merlot can be a very simple wine and can be sometimes blended with other grapes like the Cabernet Sauvignon.

Cabernet Sauvignon

A grape variety that is able to grow in just about any climate that isn't very cool, also came from bordeaux of the médoc district. These wines are high in tannin and are medium to full bodied. It can be described as a wine with aroma and flavor of blackcurrants or cassis.

Pinot noir

One of the greatest wines ever if made with good care, it is a red Burgundy from France. The grape demands the right climate and soil, so the production is limited.
It can be described as fruity or earthy aroma/flavor and it's high in alcohol, medium to high acidity and medium to low tannin.

Syrah/Shiraz

The Syrah grape comes of the northern part of France's Rhône Valley, it creates deeply colored red wines with full body, firm tannin and have flavors/aromas of berries, smoked meat, black peppers and tar. A wine that comes in different styles, some of them are fruity and medium bodied.

Here are some of the popular white wines:

- Chardonnay
- Sauvignon Blanc
- Riesling
- Pinot Gris/Grigio

These whites are great with white meats, cheeses, creamy/buttery meals, some pasta, seafood and desserts.

Chardonnay

This is one of the most popular white wines in the world, it is a classic one with a lot of varieties like dry, citrus, green apple to ripe flavor/aroma.
It's a grape of different regions in Burgundy, France.

Sauvignon Blanc

A classic wine if the Loire Valley of France, it have an intense character and citrus overtones. Some of the Sauvignon have a peachy flavor/aroma, some have an aromatic gooseberry and passionfruit characters.

Riesling

A classic german white, most known for the light bodied whines. These wines have intense notes of peach, apricot, citrus in combination with white floral notes. It is presented in a lot of variations, from sweet to dry, they are very versatile and can be combined with many different foods.

Well, now you know something about the differences of all the kinds wine. My favourites are the Shiraz and the not so common wine Verdejo, but if I have to choose a more common one I like the Sauvignon.
